Chinese tech giant Huawei has amassed over 3 million pre-orders for its triple-folding smartphone, according to its website on Monday. This comes just hours before Apple’s anticipated reveal of its new iPhone lineup. Huawei’s Mate XT, a Z-shaped tri-fold phone, is set to be unveiled at a launch event on Tuesday, as announced on its WeChat account.
Customers who pre-ordered the device will receive instructions on how to purchase it on the day of the launch event, without needing to make a down payment beforehand.
This significant number of pre-orders highlights Huawei’s resilience in the face of U.S. sanctions and reinforces its status as a major competitor to Apple, which had to reduce prices earlier this year to maintain its market share. Huawei’s event will follow Apple’s September 9 event, where Apple is expected to showcase its iPhone 16 lineup with a focus on AI integration in its flagship models.
In the second quarter, Huawei was the leading foldable phone seller in China, capturing a 42% share of the domestic market, according to IDC consultancy.
