According to a report by Nikkei, Apple plans to transition all future iPhones to OLED displays starting in 2025

According to a report from Japan’s Nikkei newspaper on Tuesday, Apple plans to switch all iPhone models sold from 2025 onward to organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays, completely phasing out liquid crystal displays (LCDs). This shift comes as OLED displays, preferred by television and smartphone makers, offer more vibrant colors and sharper contrast, making them ideal for high-definition content.

The move will cut Japan’s Sharp Corp and Japan Display out of Apple’s handset supply chain, according to the report. Apple has already placed orders for OLED displays for the upcoming iPhone SE with China’s BOE Technology and South Korea’s LG Display.

A decade ago, Sharp and Japan Display provided 70% of iPhone screens but have recently only supplied LCDs for the iPhone SE and do not mass-produce OLED displays for smartphones. Apple first introduced OLED panels in the iPhone X in 2017 and has since incorporated them into its premium models. The latest iPad Pro, launched in May, also features OLED screens. Sharp, Japan Display, and LG Display declined to comment on the matter, and Apple has yet to respond to a request for comment.
