Amazon is creating eyeglasses for drivers to reduce delivery times by seconds

Amazon is reportedly working on smart eyeglasses, called “Amelia,” designed to help delivery drivers navigate more efficiently and reduce delivery times. These glasses feature a small screen that provides step-by-step navigation, assisting drivers in maneuvering through buildings, around obstacles, and directly to their destinations. By saving seconds on each delivery, this tool could have a substantial impact given Amazon’s vast daily package volume.

The smart glasses may replace handheld GPS devices, freeing drivers’ hands to handle more packages and improve efficiency. They might also include a camera to capture delivery confirmation photos, offering instant proof of delivery for customers. However, the project faces technical hurdles, especially with battery life, as current prototypes have difficulty lasting an entire shift without becoming too heavy or uncomfortable.

This development highlights Amazon’s focus on optimizing the “last 100 yards” of delivery to reduce costs per package as competition with companies like Walmart intensifies. While these glasses represent Amazon’s commitment to innovating the delivery experience, the project’s continuation will depend on whether it meets performance and cost-effectiveness criteria.
