Employees at several major U.S. tech companies are showing overwhelming financial support for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, according to donation data, even as influential tech billionaires back her Republican opponent, Donald Trump. Workers at Alphabet, Amazon, and Microsoft have contributed millions to Harris’ campaign—far more than those supporting Trump—based on data from OpenSecrets. This data includes donations from employees, owners, and their immediate family members.
While many tech employees are backing Harris, prominent figures like Tesla CEO Elon Musk and venture capitalists Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz are supporting Trump due to his policies on the economy, taxes, and big business. The 2024 presidential election has divided Silicon Valley, a historically Democratic stronghold, with investors like Reid Hoffman and Mark Cuban endorsing Harris for her stances on abortion rights and tech policies. In contrast, some tech leaders have become critical of current Democratic President Joe Biden’s policies on mergers, acquisitions, and data privacy.
Although companies are prohibited from directly donating to federal campaigns under campaign finance laws, employees can still contribute personally. For example, Alphabet workers and their families have donated $2.16 million to Harris—nearly 40 times more than to Trump. Similarly, Amazon and Microsoft employees donated over $1 million each to Harris, while Trump’s campaign received far smaller sums from these firms.
Corporate employees at tech giants like Amazon generally earn more than those in other sectors, such as Walmart, giving them greater ability to make political donations. Meta and Apple employees have also been significantly more inclined to donate to Harris rather than Trump. Silicon Valley’s preference for Harris is evident, as more than 100 venture capitalists have voiced support for her due to her pro-innovation stance on business and technology.
