Meta Platforms, the social media giant, announced on Tuesday that it will inform Brazilian users about how their personal data will be used to train generative artificial intelligence (AI), in response to a demand from Brazil’s data protection watchdog. Starting on Tuesday, Meta’s users in Brazil will receive notifications via email and on Facebook and Instagram, giving them the option to reject the use of their data for AI training.
In July, Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) temporarily suspended Meta’s updated privacy policy regarding AI data usage, but reversed this decision last Friday after Meta agreed to provide the necessary disclosures. That same month, Meta paused the use of its generative AI tools in Brazil, including AI-generated stickers for WhatsApp, the country’s second-largest user base.
Meta explained that it suspended these tools while in discussions with the ANPD to resolve concerns about AI usage. When asked by Reuters if these tools would be reinstated after the suspension was lifted, Meta only reiterated that the suspension was initially implemented while talks with the ANPD were ongoing.
