US cryptocurrency leaders to host a fundraising event in Washington for Harris

Cryptocurrency investors and industry leaders, urging Vice President Kamala Harris to adopt a more lenient regulatory approach to the sector, are planning to raise at least $100,000 for her at a Washington fundraiser on Sept. 13. The grassroots event, scheduled between the Congressional Black Caucus and Congressional Hispanic Caucus conferences, aims to unite a diverse group of donors, according to organizers. Ticket prices range from $500 to $5,000, said Cleve Mesidor, executive director of the Blockchain Foundation and one of the event’s organizers.

Though the fundraising goal is modest compared to the vast sums Harris has raised since becoming the Democratic presidential candidate in July, it reflects growing support from some in the crypto industry who are backing her over Republican nominee Donald Trump, who has attracted large crypto donors with pro-industry promises.

The event’s organizers, including Tiffany Smith, co-chair of the Blockchain & Cryptocurrency Working Group at WilmerHale, and crypto founder Rahilla Zafar, hope that if Harris is elected, she will adopt a more favorable stance toward crypto after the Biden administration’s SEC cracked down on the industry, citing violations of securities laws—claims the crypto sector disputes.

Mesidor sees the fundraiser as an opportunity to discuss how a potential Harris administration could foster crypto innovation and increase capital access for communities of color. “We wanted to show support for the new Democratic nominee and ensure she understands the significance of this industry,” said Smith.

The group, unaffiliated with the Harris campaign, is among several crypto advocates backing her, including a separate organization called Crypto4Harris, which also plans fundraising events and recently hosted a town hall featuring billionaire Mark Cuban and financier Anthony Scaramucci in support of Harris.

While Harris has yet to take a public stance on crypto, her campaign staff has met with major firms like Coinbase and Ripple. Crypto companies are contributing to pro-crypto congressional candidates across both parties via super PACs. Brian Nelson, a senior adviser to the Harris campaign, suggested at a recent event that she would support the growth of emerging technologies, which the crypto industry viewed as a positive signal.

“Harris has a golden opportunity to present a clear plan to win over voters in the crypto industry,” said Zafar.
