CrowdStrike executive set to testify before Congress regarding IT outage

A senior executive from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike is scheduled to testify before a U.S. House subcommittee on Sept. 24 regarding a faulty software update that caused a global IT outage. Adam Meyers, the company’s senior vice president for counter adversary operations, will appear before the House Homeland Security Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection subcommittee, the panel announced on Friday.

“Given the widespread disruption caused by CrowdStrike’s faulty software update, which affected critical sectors from aviation to healthcare, it is crucial to restore public trust in the IT systems that Americans rely on every day,” said Representative Mark Green, chairman of the Homeland Security committee. In July, the committee requested CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz to testify regarding the global outage. CrowdStrike has not commented on the matter.

The outage on July 19 resulted in worldwide flight cancellations and affected industries such as banking, healthcare, media, and hospitality. It disrupted internet services, impacting 8.5 million Microsoft Windows devices. Delta Air Lines, which canceled 7,000 flights affecting 1.3 million passengers and incurred $500 million in losses, has indicated plans for legal action, though CrowdStrike disputes responsibility for the disruptions.

This week, CrowdStrike revised its revenue and profit projections downward due to the fallout from the faulty update and warned of ongoing challenges for the next year. The company also confirmed that it has received inquiries from government authorities regarding the incident.
