Meta Platforms has decided to abandon its plans for a high-end mixed-reality headset designed to rival Apple’s Vision Pro, according to a report from The Information on Friday. The report cites two Meta employees who stated that the company’s Reality Labs division was instructed to halt development of the device this week following a product review meeting.

The scrapped headset, internally code-named “La Jolla,” had been slated for a 2027 release and was expected to feature ultra-high-resolution micro OLED screens, similar to the technology used in Apple’s Vision Pro.

The mixed reality headset market has gained renewed attention since Apple’s entry last year, though the Vision Pro has faced challenges in sales due to its steep $3,500 price tag. Meanwhile, Meta’s Reality Labs division, responsible for its Quest headset line, has suffered billions in losses. Despite this, CEO Mark Zuckerberg remains optimistic about the long-term potential of augmented and virtual reality.

Meta’s current Quest lineup includes the Quest 2, priced at $200, and the Quest 3, which sells for $500. Production of the Quest Pro, its most expensive headset at $999, was discontinued in 2023 due to disappointing sales and negative reviews. Meta has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.
