AI-enabled PCs made up 14% of all personal computers shipped in the second quarter, according to research firm Canalys, with Apple leading the charge as the integration of AI features helps revive demand in the market.
PC manufacturers and chipmakers are increasingly focusing on devices that can handle AI tasks locally, without relying on the cloud, as the industry recovers from a significant downturn. These AI PCs are typically equipped with neural processing units designed specifically for AI operations.
Apple dominates the AI PC market, holding about 60% of the share, largely due to its Mac lineup that features M-series chips with built-in neural engines, according to the report.
AI PC shipments running on Microsoft’s Windows platform saw a 127% sequential increase in the quarter. Microsoft launched its “Copilot+” AI PCs in May, using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon PC chips, which are based on Arm Holdings’ architecture.
Struggling chipmaker Intel also boosted its deliveries of AI PC chips in an effort to benefit from the growing demand for AI-capable devices. The report highlights that the introduction of AI PCs is also fueling growth in the premium segment, with shipments of Windows PCs priced over $800 increasing by 9% sequentially.
Lenovo’s AI PC shipments surged by 228% sequentially, accounting for about 6% of its total Windows PC shipments in the June quarter. HP’s AI PCs made up 8% of its Windows shipments, while Dell’s AI PC shipments represented just under 7% of its Windows shipments.
Ishan Dutt, principal analyst at Canalys, noted, “With a strong foundation now set, AI-capable PC shipments are poised to gain further traction in the second half of 2024.”
