On Wednesday, Apple Inc. unveiled the design of its first retail location in India as a number of onlookers rushed to catch a glimpse of the store’s black-and-yellow artwork inspired by Mumbai’s recognizable taxis.
According to a source familiar with the situation who spoke to Reuters, the business is currently behind barricades but is expected to open this month.
The Cupertino, California-based corporation now has a significant presence in India after opening an online store in the second-largest smartphone market in the world in 2020.
Apple only has 3% of the Indian smartphone market due to its expensive costs.
Apple has already had difficulties while attempting to create actual stores in the nation; as a result, launch plans for 2021 have been postponed due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
Nonetheless, Apple products have been offered in India for many years via resellers and on e-commerce sites like Amazon.com Inc. and Walmart Inc.
With several Apple products, notably the iPhone, being produced there by Taiwanese contract electronics manufacturers Foxconn and Wistron Corp., India is also gradually emerging as a manufacturing hub. Apple also intends to produce AirPods and iPads in India.
The first physical location is in the prestigious Reliance Jio World Drive mall, which also houses a number of high-end jewelry and clothing companies like Michael Kors, Kate Spade, and Swarovski.
According to Apple, the store’s brilliant lighting was “inspired by the renowned Kaali Peeli taxi art unique to Mumbai,” a reference to the city’s venerable yellow and black taxis.
On Wednesday night, customers were shooting pictures and recording films on their iPhones in front of the store, where the Apple logo was decorated in a range of hues and a modified version of the company’s signature welcome, “Hello Mumbai,” was shown.
