Elon Musk, the new owner of the microblogging platform Twitter on Tuesday announce via his twitter handle that the social media platform will begin to charge verified users $8 monthly, so if you have the blue mark next to your handle you will be charge a monthly subscription going forward. The Tech Billionaire had successfully taken over Twitter after he completed the purchase of the company in deal worth $44 billion. The paid service comes with advantages though, users that subscribed to this tier service will enjoy boost in how many people see their tweets; show them half as many ads; and give them the ability to post longer video and audio clips. This will elude regular users. Twitter also confirmed that publications who seeks verification would be able to bypass the fee. Many users took twitter to complain about the new development but this did not help as Elon confirmed their complains will not change the decision he twitted “To all complainers, please continue complaining, but it will cost $8’’
Though this seems new to most of the platform users but since 2021 twitter has provided users with “access to premium features like Undo Tweet” for around $4.99 per month, this an upgrade of that service. Considering the amount Elon put in the acquisition of the company it is understandable from business point of view, it is a business, he wants to break even and make profit, the only way to do that is to introduce such premium services.
